Magnesium sulphate paste for a Bartholin cyst: what to know

The Bartholin glands sit near the lower vaginal opening. A blocked duct can cause a cyst, while infection can produce an abscess with marked tenderness, warmth, redness, or pus. A surface paste cannot show whether the duct is blocked, whether an abscess has formed, or whether another cause explains the lump.

A warm sitz bath may ease discomfort for some people, but do not squeeze, lance, or insert products into the vagina. These actions can damage delicate tissue and make infection harder to manage.

Arrange a gynaecology or primary-care assessment for a new, persistent, recurrent, or painful lump near the vaginal opening. If a clinician specifically advises paste on external skin, follow the exact instructions, keep it away from the vagina and eyes, and stop for burning, rash, or swelling.

Wear loose clothing, keep the area gently clean and dry, and use pain relief only if it is suitable for you. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, allergies, diabetes, immune problems, and medicines you take.

Seek same-day care if pain or swelling is rapidly worsening, sitting or walking is difficult, pus is present, or you have fever or feel unwell. Get emergency help for fainting, severe illness, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty.

Ask whether the lump is a cyst or abscess, whether drainage is needed, which comfort measures are safe, and how to recognise recurrence. If you have had a similar lump before, ask whether follow-up or a different procedure would reduce repeated episodes.
