Can you use Sudocrem on a Bartholin cyst?

A Bartholin cyst is a fluid-filled swelling caused by blockage of a gland duct near the vaginal opening. A barrier cream applied to the skin cannot reach or clear that blockage, and covering a draining area may trap moisture or make the site harder to assess.

Sudocrem is intended for certain external skin irritations, but a suspected Bartholin cyst sits beneath the skin. It will not remove collected fluid, treat an abscess or prevent a blocked duct from recurring.

Vulval skin is sensitive, and fragranced or medicated products can sting or cause irritation in some people. If you have already applied the cream and develop burning, itching or a rash, rinse the external area gently with water and stop using it until you receive advice.

A comfortably warm bath may ease mild soreness and encourage natural drainage. Keep the skin clean and dry, choose loose breathable underwear and avoid squeezing, piercing or repeatedly handling the swelling.

If the cyst opens, allow it to drain onto a clean pad, wash with water and change the pad when damp. Before using any cream near the opening or on a treated wound, check with a pharmacist or clinician who knows where you plan to apply it.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if pain is increasing, the swelling grows rapidly, the skin is hot or very red, pus appears, or you develop fever or feel generally unwell. These signs may accompany an abscess, which can need a drainage procedure rather than topical cream.

Seek urgent help for severe pain, spreading redness or difficulty sitting or walking. A persistent, recurrent or uncertain lump should also be examined, and any new vulval lump after menopause warrants clinical assessment.

Ask whether the skin itself needs treatment, which products are suitable for the external vulva, and whether the cyst shows infection or requires drainage. Bring the product packaging or a list of its ingredients if you experienced irritation after applying it.
