What should you know about magnesium sulphate and water?

Magnesium sulphate can dissolve in water, but a solution is not automatically safe to drink, apply or inject. The intended use, grade, concentration and water quality all matter. Agricultural material, a bath product and an injectable medicine are not interchangeable just because each can be mixed with water.

In clinical care, trained staff prepare prescribed solutions using a specified diluent and method. They consider kidney function, other medicines and the route of administration. A home mixture cannot reliably reproduce that process.

Follow the exact label for a consumer product and do not estimate a dose by sight. Never inject a home-prepared mixture. Do not drink a solution made from a soil or agricultural product, and do not use magnesium sulphate in pregnancy unless the maternity team has advised the exact product and purpose.

Get urgent advice after swallowing an unlabelled or agricultural mixture, or after eye or skin exposure that causes ongoing burning. Emergency help is needed for trouble breathing, severe weakness, confusion, repeated vomiting, fainting or a seizure. Keep the container and describe how the mixture was made.

Ask whether water is the correct diluent, whether the product is suitable for your intended use, how it should be stored, and what symptoms mean you should stop and seek help. Mention pregnancy, kidney disease and all medicines.
