MAC 400 ECG machine: what to know

A MAC 400 ECG machine is used to capture a resting electrocardiogram for a clinician to interpret. Adhesive electrodes detect the heart's electrical signals and the machine displays or prints a tracing. The recording can support assessment of heart rhythm and electrical changes, but the equipment alone cannot explain every cause of a symptom.

The tracing represents electrical activity over successive heartbeats. A clinician considers its rate, rhythm, and waveform pattern alongside your symptoms, examination, medicines, and previous results. A technically poor tracing may be repeated. A result that looks different from an earlier one does not automatically identify the cause; further assessment may be needed.

You may need to uncover part of the chest so electrodes can be positioned correctly. Tell the technician if your skin is irritated or if you have an implanted device. Lie quietly, keep your muscles relaxed, and avoid talking while the recording is taken. Afterward, ask who will review the tracing and when you should expect an explanation.

Call emergency services for new or severe chest pain, severe breathlessness, collapse, fainting, or a fast or irregular heartbeat accompanied by weakness, dizziness, or chest discomfort. An appointment for an ECG should not delay emergency assessment when symptoms are active or rapidly worsening.

Ask what prompted the test, whether your medicines or activity could affect the tracing, whether you need repeat testing, and which symptoms should lead you to seek help before your follow-up.
