What should you know about lyonsleaf perioral dermatitis?

Perioral dermatitis can cause clusters of tiny red or skin-coloured bumps, dryness, burning, tightness, or scaling around the mouth. The skin immediately next to the lip border may be less affected. Similar changes can occur around the nose or eyes, which is why the term periorificial dermatitis is also used.

It can resemble acne or sensitive skin, but harsh acne products may increase stinging. Topical corticosteroids can temporarily reduce redness while allowing the rash to persist or rebound, so prescribed creams should not be started, stopped, or changed without a clinician's plan.

Use lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Pause scrubs, exfoliating acids, fragranced cosmetics, and heavy occlusive products around the affected area. Discuss steroid use with the prescriber rather than abruptly making changes to a long treatment plan.

A clinician may recommend topical antibiotic therapy or an oral medicine when the rash is persistent or extensive. Oral antibiotics used for acne are not interchangeable with self-treatment; selection depends on your history, pregnancy considerations, other medicines, and examination.

Arrange a dermatology review if facial bumps continue, spread toward the eyes, or interfere with eating, work, or sleep. Seek prompt care for marked eyelid swelling, eye pain, vision changes, blistering, rapidly spreading redness, or fever, because these features may indicate another condition needing timely treatment.
