What should you know about lynch syndrome lung cancer?

Lynch syndrome results from an inherited mismatch repair gene change and is best known for its association with Bowel Cancer, Womb Cancer and Ovarian Cancer. Lung cancer is not usually treated as the defining cancer risk of Lynch syndrome. A cough, breathlessness or chest discomfort therefore cannot be interpreted from the Lynch diagnosis alone. Symptoms may come from infection, asthma, smoking-related disease, medication effects or many other causes, so assessment should consider the whole clinical picture.

Tell your clinician that you have Lynch syndrome when discussing a persistent respiratory symptom or an abnormal chest image. Ask whether the finding needs imaging, examination, lung-function testing or referral; the appropriate plan depends on the symptom and history. Continue the surveillance recommended for Lynch syndrome, including Colonoscopy when advised, because bowel screening remains a central risk-management measure. Arrange prompt medical review for a cough that does not settle, coughing blood, persistent chest pain, unexplained breathlessness, repeated chest infections, or unexplained weight loss. These symptoms do not establish lung cancer, and their urgency depends on severity and progression. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, new confusion, fainting, or sudden chest pain. Do not wait for a routine genetics appointment when breathing is acutely affected.
