What should you know about lynch syndrome cause?

Mismatch repair genes help correct small errors that arise when cells copy their DNA. When one of these genes does not work properly, errors can build up as cells divide, which can make certain cancers more likely. Lynch syndrome is linked particularly with Bowel Cancer and can also be associated with Womb Cancer and Ovarian Cancer. Having the syndrome does not mean a person has cancer; it signals an inherited risk that can guide earlier, more tailored monitoring.

Ask for a genetics appointment if your personal or family history suggests Lynch syndrome, or if tumour testing has raised the possibility. Genetic Counselling can explain what a result may mean for you and relatives before testing. A Hereditary Cancer Panel Test may examine several relevant genes, although the right test depends on the clinical context. Share confirmed results with close relatives so they can decide whether their own medical advice should include genetic assessment. Screening plans are individual and may include Colonoscopy.

Arrange a clinical review for blood in the stool, a persistent change in bowel habit, unexplained iron-deficiency anaemia, ongoing abdominal discomfort, or unusual bleeding. These symptoms have several possible causes and do not by themselves establish Lynch syndrome or cancer. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, fainting, severe abdominal pain, or repeated vomiting. A family pattern of bowel, womb or ovarian cancer at younger ages is also a reason to discuss genetic assessment.
