What should you know about lymphoscintigraphy melanoma?

Short answer
Lymphoscintigraphy for melanoma is a mapping scan that helps locate lymphatic drainage and the sentinel node, supporting accurate planning before selected surgery.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Purpose
- Map lymphatic drainage near a melanoma
- Often linked with
- Sentinel lymph node biopsy
- What it shows
- The route and likely first-draining node, not a diagnosis on its own
How the mapping works
A small tracer is placed near the melanoma or its removal site. A specialised camera follows the tracer as it moves through lymphatic channels and creates images of the drainage route. The first node or nodes reached are called sentinel nodes because they are the initial stations examined for cells travelling away from the skin lesion.
The scan maps anatomy; it does not by itself prove that melanoma is present in a node. If a sentinel-node biopsy is planned, the surgeon uses the map during the procedure and a laboratory examines removed tissue.
Preparing for the appointment
Follow the hospital's instructions about arrival time, clothing, medicines, allergies, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. Tell the team about previous reactions to tracers or procedures. The injection and imaging may take time, and the sequence can vary with the melanoma site and the drainage pattern.
Bring your pathology information and ask how the scan fits with surgical excision or other skin-cancer surgery. Results are interpreted with the original tumour findings and examination, rather than in isolation.
When to seek care
Contact the treating team if the injection site becomes increasingly red, swollen, painful, or develops discharge. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fainting, or widespread hives after the procedure. After melanoma treatment, promptly report a new lump near the scar or persistent unexplained swelling.
Questions for your doctor
Why is lymphatic mapping recommended for my melanoma? Which area will be mapped, and will a sentinel lymph node biopsy follow? When will pathology results be available, and how could each result affect surgery, immunotherapy, or follow-up?

Questions people ask
Is lymphoscintigraphy the same as a biopsy?
No. Lymphoscintigraphy creates a map using a tracer. A biopsy removes tissue for laboratory examination.
Does a mapped node automatically contain melanoma?
No. Mapping identifies a drainage pathway; pathology is needed to determine whether melanoma cells are present.
