What should you know about lymphocytic mastitis?

The inflammation may cause a firm area, tenderness, swelling, warmth, or a change in the skin or nipple. Symptoms can overlap with infection, blocked ducts, and other breast conditions, so a lump or persistent change needs clinical assessment rather than a self-diagnosis. A breast symptom is not, by itself, proof of cancer. Examination and imaging may be used, and a tissue sample can sometimes clarify the cause.

Arrange a breast review if a new area persists, returns, or changes. Note when symptoms began, whether they relate to breastfeeding, and whether one or both breasts are affected. If you are breastfeeding, a lactation consultation can help check positioning, milk transfer, and comfort while the breast is assessed. Wear supportive clothing, avoid forceful massage, and use only pain relief that is suitable for you and recommended by a clinician.

Contact a clinician promptly for fever, rapidly spreading redness, worsening swelling, pus or blood from the nipple, or feeling markedly unwell. Seek urgent help for severe pain, faintness, or a rapidly enlarging breast change. Persistent symptoms without fever still deserve review because inflammation and infection can require different treatment.

Ask what findings support lymphocytic mastitis, whether imaging or biopsy is needed, and how infection has been considered. If breastfeeding, ask how to protect milk supply and comfort, which treatments are compatible with feeding, and when the breast should be rechecked.
