What should you know about lymphatic melanoma?

Melanoma begins in pigment-producing skin cells. Lymphatic vessels drain fluid from tissues toward lymph nodes, and melanoma cells may be evaluated along that route. A lymph node finding does not, by itself, describe the full extent of disease; tissue examination and imaging are interpreted together by the treating team.

The relevant drainage area depends on where the original skin lesion was located. Staging may distinguish a melanoma confined to the skin from one involving a nearby node or a more distant site. This distinction helps clinicians discuss surgery, medicines, and monitoring.

Take the pathology report and any scan results to a dermatology or oncology appointment. Ask whether the primary lesion was fully removed, whether a sentinel lymph node biopsy is appropriate, and which lymph-node region needs examination. Treatment can include surgical excision, wider skin-cancer surgery, tumour removal surgery, or systemic treatment such as immunotherapy, depending on the stage and your overall health.

Keep a record of new skin changes, swelling, persistent pain, or changes near a scar. Attend planned follow-up visits even when the treated area looks healed.

Arrange prompt medical review for a rapidly changing mole, a sore that does not heal, a new firm lump near a melanoma scar, or swelling in an arm, leg, neck, or groin. Seek urgent care for severe breathlessness, new weakness, confusion, or a sudden severe headache. These symptoms have several possible causes, but they should not wait for a routine appointment.
