What should you know about lymphatic cellulitis?

Cellulitis affects deeper layers of skin and the tissues beneath them. The involved area may become red, hot, swollen, tender, and increasingly painful; fever or feeling unwell can also occur. Infection may enter through a cut, cracked skin, bite, wound, or fungal infection such as athlete’s foot. Lymphatic vessels can carry inflammation away from the original area, sometimes causing a spreading red line or tender glands.

A skin symptom does not identify its cause by itself. A clinician considers the appearance, speed of change, temperature, pain, medical history, and possible entry point. Diabetes, lymphoedema, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system can affect risk and management.

Arrange same-day medical assessment for a new, rapidly spreading, hot, painful, or swollen red area, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing it, and note the edge of redness so changes are easier to describe. Elevating a swollen limb may help comfort while you arrange care, but it does not replace treatment.

Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it. Ask about wound care and management of an underlying foot infection, skin crack, or swelling problem. Do not use leftover antibiotics or delay assessment while trying home remedies.

Seek urgent help for confusion, faintness, very fast breathing, severe weakness, blue or mottled skin, or difficulty staying awake; these can signal a dangerous systemic infection. Immediate review is also needed when redness expands quickly, pain is severe, blisters appear, or fever persists. People with diabetes or reduced immunity should seek advice early.
