What should you know about a lymph node PET scan?

Before the scan, a small amount of FDG radiotracer is given through a vein. Cells using more glucose may take up more tracer, so PET can highlight active areas while CT shows the node’s position and surrounding anatomy. Activity can occur with cancer, infection, or inflammation; the image alone does not establish the cause. A clinician compares the scan with symptoms, examination findings, blood tests, and earlier imaging. Findings may help assess lymphoma or investigate cancer when the original site is not clear.

Follow the imaging centre’s instructions about fasting, medicines, diabetes management, and fluids. Tell the team if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic, or have difficulty lying still. Wear comfortable clothing and expect a quiet resting period after the tracer is given. After imaging, ask when and how the report will be discussed. The next step may be observation, another test, or a biopsy, depending on the whole clinical picture.

Contact the treating team promptly for new breathing difficulty, trouble swallowing, rapidly increasing neck or chest swelling, or severe illness with fever. These symptoms need assessment because a swollen node or another process may be affecting nearby structures. A scan appointment should not delay urgent care for severe symptoms.

Ask which lymph node regions were assessed, whether activity is seen elsewhere, what non-cancer causes could explain the finding, and whether tissue sampling is recommended. Clarify when the report will be available and which symptoms should prompt earlier contact.
