What should you know about lycra compression garment?

Lymphoedema is swelling caused by a problem with lymph fluid drainage, sometimes after cancer treatment. A made-to-measure lycra garment supports the skin and soft tissues, helping limit fluid build-up during movement and daily activities. It may be used on an arm, leg, trunk or another affected area. Compression should feel supportive, not painful, and the correct design depends on the location of swelling, skin condition, movement and circulation. A garment is one part of care rather than a replacement for assessment.

Have the garment measured and checked by a lymphoedema specialist. Follow instructions about when to put it on, how long to wear it and how to wash it. Put it on smoothly, without folds or twisted seams, and inspect the skin when removing it. Keep the fabric clean and replace it when it loses shape or no longer fits after swelling changes. Gentle activity, skin care and prescribed exercises may be used alongside compression.

Remove the garment and contact your care team if it causes numbness, tingling, increasing pain, colour change, cold fingers or toes, or new marks that do not settle. Seek prompt medical advice for rapidly increasing swelling, redness, warmth, skin breakdown or fever, which can indicate infection or another problem. Emergency help is needed for sudden chest pain, severe breathlessness or a newly painful swollen limb.

Ask whether compression is suitable for your circulation and skin, which garment style is appropriate, and how it should be fitted. Ask how to manage hot weather, exercise and travel, when to remove it, and how to recognise a poor fit. Confirm who will review the garment if swelling or your body shape changes.
