What should you know about LVA DEXA scan?

Short answer
A DEXA scan is a quick imaging test that measures bone mineral density and helps assess fracture risk.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Assess bone mineral density
What the scan means
DEXA stands for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The scanner compares how much X-ray energy passes through bone and soft tissue, commonly at the hip and lower spine. The result helps a clinician judge whether bone is weaker than expected and whether follow-up is needed. It does not show every cause of bone pain, and it is different from an ordinary X-ray.
You may be offered this test when there are concerns about osteoporosis, a previous fracture, or a health condition that can affect bone strength. Premature ovarian insufficiency can also prompt a discussion about bone health.
Before and during the appointment
Tell the imaging team if you might be pregnant, recently had a contrast examination, or have difficulty lying still. Wear comfortable clothing and follow the centre’s instructions about calcium supplements or medicines. During the scan, you lie on a padded table while the arm of the scanner passes over the selected areas. It should not hurt, although staying still matters for clear images.
Bring previous bone-density results if available. A clinician will interpret the report alongside your age, medical history, medicines, and fracture history; do not change treatment based on the scan wording alone.
When to seek medical advice
Arrange medical review if you have a new fracture after a minor injury, persistent back pain, loss of height, or concerns about a medicine that may affect bones. Seek urgent care after a serious fall or injury, especially if you cannot stand, bear weight, or move the affected limb normally.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which bones will be scanned, what the result could change, whether you need repeat monitoring, and how calcium, vitamin D, exercise, falls prevention, or prescribed treatment fit your situation.

Questions people ask
Does a DEXA scan hurt?
The scan is non-invasive. You need to lie still, which may be uncomfortable if you have pain or limited movement.
Can I eat before a DEXA scan?
Many people can eat normally, but follow the imaging centre’s instructions about calcium supplements and recent contrast tests.
