What should you know about lung PET scan images?

A PET-CT Scan combines metabolic information from an FDG Radiotracer with detailed CT pictures of body structures. Areas taking up more tracer may appear brighter, while the CT part shows their size, shape, and location. Infection and inflammation can also produce increased activity, and some tumours show limited activity, so the image is interpreted rather than judged by colour alone.

The report may describe a lung nodule, lymph nodes, or activity elsewhere. A scan can help map possible disease and guide the next test, but it does not replace clinical examination or tissue diagnosis when confirmation is needed.

Ask the ordering clinician to review the written report with you and explain which findings are definite, uncertain, or unrelated. The team may compare the PET-CT Scan with earlier CT images, consider symptoms and laboratory information, and recommend biopsy or another test if tissue is needed.

Tell the imaging team about diabetes, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, recent infection, and medicines that affect preparation. Follow the provided fasting and activity instructions so the FDG Radiotracer is distributed as intended. Do not interpret a screenshot without the full report and clinical context.

A PET scan itself does not usually create an emergency after you leave, but seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain with fainting, confusion, blue lips, or substantial coughing of blood. Contact your clinician promptly for worsening respiratory symptoms, persistent fever, or a new symptom that concerns you while awaiting results.

Ask what the bright areas correspond to on the CT image, whether the pattern could reflect infection or inflammation, and whether lymph nodes or other organs show activity. Clarify whether tissue confirmation is needed, what the next test is meant to answer, and when the full PET-CT Scan report will be discussed.
