What should you know about lung nodule risk?

Clinicians consider age, smoking history, previous cancer, exposure history, symptoms, and whether the nodule has changed on earlier images. Features such as smooth or irregular edges and its location can also influence the plan, but no single feature decides the diagnosis.

A nodule is a small area seen in the lung. It can reflect scar tissue, a healed infection, inflammation, or a tumour, so the image and your medical history must be considered together. A nodule is not, by itself, a diagnosis of cancer.

Keep the report and any earlier images available. Your clinician may recommend a CT Scan to examine size, shape, edges, and change over time. Depending on the findings, follow-up imaging, specialist review, or a Biopsy may be discussed.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, blue lips, or coughing up more than a small streak of blood. Contact your clinician promptly for persistent coughing, coughing blood, fever, or worsening breathlessness.

Ask which features affect your assessment, whether prior scans are available, what follow-up is recommended, and when biopsy would add useful information.
