Lung cancer and weight loss: what to know

Weight may fall because eating becomes difficult, food tastes different, swallowing is uncomfortable, or breathlessness makes meals tiring. The tumour and the body's inflammatory response can also alter appetite and energy use. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, pain, nausea, constipation, anxiety, and low mood may add to the problem. Weight loss alone cannot identify its cause or establish how advanced the cancer is. A clinician may review food intake, symptoms, medicines, muscle strength, and recent changes before recommending support.

Tell the oncology team about unplanned loss of weight, reduced appetite, or trouble eating. Ask for a dietitian review. Small frequent meals, nourishing snacks, and calorie-dense foods may be easier than large portions; fluids and protein can support hydration and strength when suitable for you. Treating nausea, mouth soreness, constipation, pain, or breathlessness can make eating more manageable. Do not start supplements, restrictive diets, or herbal products without checking their suitability. Lung cancer treatment may include systemic treatment, surgery, or radiotherapy, and nutritional planning can be adjusted around it.

Contact your cancer team promptly if eating or drinking is becoming difficult, vomiting continues, urine becomes unusually dark, dizziness develops, or weakness limits walking or daily tasks. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, new confusion, fainting, chest pain, or inability to keep fluids down. A new hoarse voice can also deserve assessment; it does not by itself diagnose cancer.
