What should you know about lung cancer throat?

Lung cancer can affect the voice when a tumour or enlarged lymph node irritates or presses on a nerve serving the voice box. Hoarseness, a weak voice, throat discomfort, cough or trouble swallowing can also result from infection, reflux, allergies, smoking-related irritation or another condition. A hoarse voice is therefore a symptom to assess, not proof of cancer. Your clinician may examine your mouth and throat, listen to your breathing, arrange imaging, or refer you for a voice-box examination.

Arrange a medical review if a throat or voice change persists, returns repeatedly, or occurs with cough, breathlessness, chest discomfort, weight loss or difficulty swallowing. Note when it began, whether it varies during the day, and any smoking or reflux history. Avoid smoking and voice strain, keep hydrated, and do not self-treat a persistent symptom with leftover medicines. If lung cancer is already diagnosed, tell the oncology team because a new throat symptom may need examination or a change in supportive care.

Seek emergency care for severe difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing throat swelling, blue lips, fainting, or coughing or vomiting a large amount of blood. Get prompt medical advice for new noisy breathing, choking episodes, or a voice change accompanied by worsening breathlessness. These warning signs relate to possible airway or bleeding problems and should not wait for a routine appointment.
