Lung Cancer Survival by Stage: What to Know

Staging brings together the tumour's size, nearby lymph nodes and whether cancer has travelled to another part of the body. Earlier stages may allow treatment aimed at removing or controlling the tumour in the chest, while more advanced disease may need treatment that reaches cancer cells throughout the body. The cancer type, gene changes, overall health and response to treatment also shape an individual outlook. A stage label cannot show exactly how one person will respond.

Your team may use scans, tissue testing and other assessments before confirming a plan. Spread to the brain is assessed when clinically appropriate; learn more about brain metastases if this is part of your care.

Ask for the exact stage and cancer type in your report, then ask what the goal of treatment is. Options can include surgery such as lung lobectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or another systemic treatment. Genomic tumour profiling may identify changes that affect treatment selection. Palliative care can help with symptoms and wellbeing at any stage, alongside cancer treatment.

Contact your oncology team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, severe weakness or a new neurological change. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, sudden confusion or collapse. A persistent hoarse voice also deserves assessment; it can have many causes and does not by itself establish cancer.
