Lung cancer spread to the brain and life expectancy

Brain metastases mean lung cancer cells have reached the brain or its surrounding structures. Outlook depends on the cancer subtype, genomic features, number and position of brain lesions, disease elsewhere, symptoms, fitness, and how the cancer responds. These factors can change during care, so an internet estimate cannot replace a conversation with the treating team.

The team may use brain imaging, neurological assessment, and body scans to understand the situation. Genomic Tumour Profiling can sometimes identify treatment options. A clinician can explain what is known now, what remains uncertain, and which signs would show that a plan is helping.

Ask for a clear explanation of the scan, treatment goals, and the next decision point. Bring a trusted person if helpful and write down medicines, symptoms, and priorities such as staying independent or spending time at home. Treatment may involve medicines for the whole body, radiotherapy, surgery in selected situations, seizure treatment, or symptom support.

Palliative Care can support headaches, fatigue, mood, communication, and practical planning alongside cancer-directed treatment. It does not mean that active treatment must stop. Your team can also discuss advance care preferences when you feel ready.

Get emergency help for a first seizure, a seizure lasting longer than expected, sudden weakness on one side, new trouble speaking, severe or rapidly worsening headache, repeated vomiting, marked confusion, or difficulty staying awake. Do not drive yourself after a seizure or sudden neurological change.
