When lung cancer spreads to the adrenal gland

The adrenal glands sit above the kidneys and make hormones that help regulate several body functions. A spot seen there on a scan is not automatically a metastasis: benign adrenal growths and other findings can look similar. Doctors may compare scans, use focused imaging, or recommend a biopsy when the result would change treatment.

The team also checks the lung tumour, lymph nodes, other organs, symptoms, general health, and tumour features. Genomic Tumour Profiling may identify changes that help match treatment. Symptoms are not a reliable measure of how much disease is present; some people have no adrenal symptoms.

Ask the oncology team what the adrenal finding represents and whether it needs confirmation. Keep appointments for staging scans and blood tests, and report new weakness, dizziness, severe nausea, abdominal or back discomfort, or unusual thirst. These symptoms can have many causes, but they may signal hormone or illness-related problems that need review.

Treatment may focus on cancer throughout the body, on a specific adrenal area, or on both. Options can include chemotherapy, targeted or immune-based medicines when suitable, radiotherapy, and occasionally surgery. Palliative Care can be added at any stage to support symptoms, decisions, and daily wellbeing.

Seek urgent help for collapse, severe weakness, confusion, persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or difficulty breathing. These signs do not confirm adrenal involvement, but they can indicate a serious problem requiring immediate assessment. Carry your cancer treatment and medicine details if you attend an emergency service.
