What should you know about lung cancer shoulder blade pain?

Short answer
Shoulder blade pain can occur for many reasons; when lung cancer is present, pain may reflect nearby irritation, spread, or another unrelated problem.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the location can be confusing
Muscle strain, a shoulder joint problem, nerve irritation, and chest or spine conditions can all cause pain near a shoulder blade. Lung cancer may cause pain when a tumour affects tissues or nerves in the chest, or when disease has spread to another area. The pattern matters: clinicians ask whether pain is one-sided, constant, worse with breathing or movement, present at night, or accompanied by cough, breathlessness, weight loss, or a hoarse voice. Pain location alone cannot identify its cause.
How to describe the pain
Note when the pain began, where it travels, what makes it better or worse, and whether it limits sleep or movement. Tell a clinician about smoking history, previous cancer, injuries, fever, cough, or breathlessness. Do not keep increasing pain medicines without advice. Assessment may include an examination and imaging chosen for your symptoms. If cancer is diagnosed, treatment decisions may involve Radiotherapy, medicines such as Chemotherapy, or other approaches; Genomic Tumour Profiling may help guide some treatment choices.
When pain needs urgent help
Seek urgent care for sudden severe chest or upper-back pain, major breathing difficulty, weakness or numbness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, fainting, or coughing blood. Arrange prompt medical review for persistent or worsening shoulder blade pain, pain that wakes you, or pain with unexplained weight loss, fever, or a persistent Hoarse Voice. These warning signs call for assessment; they do not prove cancer.
Questions to ask
What causes should we consider? Do I need imaging? Which pain-relief options fit my medicines and health? What change should make me contact the team again?
Questions people ask
Does shoulder blade pain mean lung cancer?
No. Shoulder blade pain has many possible causes, and its location cannot diagnose lung cancer.
Can pain be the only symptom?
Sometimes pain occurs without other obvious symptoms, but persistent or changing pain still needs clinical assessment.
