What should you know about lung cancer no cough?

A tumour may not irritate the airways enough to cause coughing. Instead, someone may notice breathlessness, chest discomfort, tiredness, reduced appetite, repeated chest infections, unexplained weight change, or a hoarse voice. A hoarse voice has many possible causes and does not by itself identify lung cancer.

Some lung cancers are discovered during imaging for another concern or during an evaluation of a persistent change. Doctors may use chest imaging, laboratory work, and a biopsy when needed. Further testing can identify the cancer type, its extent, and whether genomic tumour profiling could inform treatment choices.

Arrange a medical review for persistent breathlessness, chest pain, a voice change that does not settle, repeated chest infections, or unexplained changes in energy or weight. Describe your smoking history, workplace or household exposures, previous chest problems, and how symptoms have changed. A clinician can decide whether imaging or another test is appropriate.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, coughing blood, chest pressure with sweating or faintness, sudden confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Emergency assessment is appropriate when breathing becomes difficult at rest or you cannot speak in full sentences.

Ask what could explain your symptoms, which examination or scan is suitable, and what would make a biopsy necessary. If cancer is diagnosed, ask about its type, stage, molecular testing, and the purpose and likely effects of proposed treatments such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or surgery.
