What should you know about lung cancer moving to brain?

Brain metastases can affect different parts of the brain, so symptoms vary. Headache, nausea, seizures, weakness, balance changes, confusion, speech difficulty, or changes in vision may occur, while some people have no symptoms and are found during staging scans. Doctors usually combine symptoms, brain imaging, and information about the lung cancer before recommending care.

The plan may include medicines to reduce swelling or control seizures, focused or whole-brain radiotherapy, surgery in selected situations, and medicines that treat cancer throughout the body. Genomic tumour profiling can help identify changes that may guide systemic treatment. Palliative care can be added at any stage to relieve symptoms and support daily life.

Contact the oncology team promptly if a new neurological symptom appears, even if it is mild or comes and goes. Bring a list of medicines and note when symptoms began, what makes them worse, and whether they affect walking, speaking, eating, or usual activities. Ask how the scan findings affect staging, which treatments are realistic, and how side effects will be monitored.

Seek emergency care for a first seizure, a seizure that does not stop, sudden weakness or numbness, new trouble speaking, severe confusion, collapse, or a sudden severe headache with vomiting. Do not drive yourself after a seizure or when neurological changes make driving unsafe.

Ask which area of the brain is involved, whether swelling is present, whether tissue testing or genomic tumour profiling is needed, and how each treatment may affect thinking, movement, work, or independence. Ask who to call outside clinic hours and what symptoms should trigger immediate help.
