Lung cancer metastasis to lymph nodes

Lymph nodes are small immune-system structures that filter lymph fluid. Lung cancer may reach nodes inside the chest, near the collarbone, or farther from the original tumour. Enlarged nodes on a scan can reflect cancer, infection, inflammation, or treatment effects, so size alone cannot settle the diagnosis.

Node involvement can influence whether surgery is suitable and whether treatment should address the chest, the whole body, or both. A hoarse voice may occur when a chest tumour or enlarged node affects a nearby nerve, but hoarseness also has common non-cancer causes.

Assessment may include CT or PET imaging, bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, or a needle sample from an accessible node. The team combines node location with the lung tumour type, molecular findings, scans of other organs, and your health. Treatment can include chemotherapy, immune or targeted treatment, radiotherapy, surgery in selected situations, and palliative care for symptom support.

Tell your team about persistent hoarseness, new swelling above a collarbone, increasing cough, or worsening breathlessness. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, coughing a large amount of blood, blue lips, sudden confusion, or inability to swallow fluids. Prompt review helps distinguish airway or nerve pressure from other causes.

Ask which lymph node stations are involved, whether tissue confirmation is needed, and what the findings mean for stage and treatment intent. Ask whether molecular testing is available, how symptoms will be monitored, and when to report voice or breathing changes.
