Lung cancer spread to bone and life expectancy

Bone metastasis means lung cancer cells have settled in a bone. It may cause aching or breakthrough pain, but some bone lesions are found during scans before symptoms begin. Affected bone can become weaker, and a lesion near the spine can threaten nerves. The team will consider the number and location of lesions, fractures or nerve pressure, tumour type, molecular features, and how treatment is working.

An outlook discussion is more useful when it is personal. Ask your oncologist what the scans show, what treatment response would look like, and which changes would prompt a new plan. No scan can determine an exact future for one person.

Treatment may combine therapy directed at the lung cancer with radiotherapy for painful or vulnerable bone areas. Medicines that strengthen bone may be considered after checking kidney function, calcium levels, dental health, and other risks. A pain specialist, physiotherapist, and palliative care team can help preserve movement, sleep, and independence. Use walking aids or activity limits only as advised, because the safest level of weight-bearing depends on the bone involved.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe back or neck pain, new leg weakness or numbness, trouble walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Contact your team quickly for a new inability to bear weight, pain after a minor movement, or pain that changes suddenly. These signs can indicate fracture or pressure on the spinal cord.

Ask which bones are involved, whether the spine or a weight-bearing bone needs protection, and whether you need a fracture or nerve assessment. Ask what treatment goals are realistic for you, how pain will be reviewed, and whether genomic tumour profiling could guide systemic therapy.
