Lung cancer metastasis sites: what to know

Short answer
Lung cancer can spread beyond the chest to the brain, bones, liver, adrenal glands, or distant lymph nodes, and scans help show where it is present.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible sites
- Brain, bones, liver, adrenal glands, and distant lymph nodes
- How it is assessed
- Imaging, selected blood tests, and sometimes biopsy
What metastasis means
Metastasis means cancer cells have moved from the original lung tumour to another part of the body. A secondary tumour keeps the features of the original lung cancer, even when it is found elsewhere. The sites involved can affect symptoms, staging, and the balance between treatments that act throughout the body and treatments aimed at a particular area.
Some people have no symptoms from a distant spread. Others may notice persistent bone pain, headaches or weakness, abdominal discomfort, or changes linked to hormone production. These symptoms have many possible causes, so they do not establish metastasis by themselves.
How doctors investigate and treat it
Your oncology team may use chest and body imaging, brain imaging when appropriate, blood tests, and a biopsy when the result would change care. The findings are combined with the cancer type, molecular results, previous treatment, and your overall health. Genomic tumour profiling may identify features that influence systemic treatment. Options can include chemotherapy, targeted or immune-based treatment, radiotherapy for a specific troublesome site, and supportive care. Surgery is considered selectively rather than automatically.
When to seek urgent care
Contact your cancer team promptly for new severe pain, worsening breathlessness, confusion, a seizure, sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or inability to walk. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, new one-sided weakness, or sudden loss of consciousness. A new hoarse voice can also deserve assessment, particularly if it persists or occurs with swallowing or breathing changes.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which sites were examined, whether any finding needs tissue confirmation, how the results change the stage, and which symptoms should trigger an urgent call. You can also ask how treatment goals will be measured and who can help with pain, sleep, nutrition, or emotional strain.
Questions people ask
Does a symptom prove that lung cancer has spread?
No. Symptoms such as pain, headache, or hoarseness can have several causes; examination and appropriate testing are needed.
Can more than one site be involved?
Yes. Imaging may show spread in more than one location, and the treatment plan is adapted to the full pattern of disease.
