Lung cancer liver metastasis: what to know

The liver may contain one area or several areas of secondary cancer. Scans, blood tests and sometimes a biopsy help distinguish spread from another liver condition and show whether cancer is present elsewhere. Some people have no liver-related symptoms. Others develop reduced appetite, tiredness, discomfort under the right ribs, nausea or yellowing of the skin and eyes. The result is considered with the lung tumour type, molecular features, prior treatment and general health.

Your team may recommend genomic tumour profiling when it could identify a medicine matched to a tumour change. Treatment can include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted medicines, radiotherapy or a combination. The aim may be to control cancer throughout the body, treat a troublesome liver area or relieve symptoms. Palliative care can be added at any stage to support comfort, nutrition, sleep, mood and practical needs.

Tell your team about increasing abdominal swelling, persistent vomiting, confusion, marked sleepiness, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, bleeding or rapidly worsening pain. Seek emergency help for severe confusion, collapse, vomiting blood or breathing difficulty. New neurological symptoms such as a seizure or weakness also require urgent assessment because lung cancer can spread to the brain.
