Lung cancer life expectancy: what to know

Doctors assess whether the cancer is confined to the lung, has reached nearby lymph nodes, or has spread to another organ such as the brain. They also identify whether it is small-cell or non-small-cell lung cancer and look for molecular changes that may guide treatment. Age, breathing capacity, other illnesses, daily function and how the tumour responds all add context. An outlook is a clinical estimate for a group of people, not a fixed timetable for one person.

Ask which scans and biopsy findings establish the stage, and whether genomic tumour profiling could identify a treatment option. Depending on the findings, care may include surgery such as lung lobectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy or targeted treatment. Supportive care can begin alongside cancer treatment to manage breathlessness, pain, appetite, sleep and emotional strain. A written treatment plan can make changes easier to follow.

Contact your oncology team promptly for worsening breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, new confusion, severe weakness or fever during treatment. Sudden trouble breathing, blue lips, collapse or inability to stay awake needs emergency care. A persistent hoarse voice also deserves assessment, although a hoarse voice has many possible causes.
