What should you know about lung cancer in lymph nodes?

Lymph nodes are small immune-system structures that filter fluid. Lung tumours can spread into nodes in the lung, chest, or area between the lungs. The location and number of involved nodes can change the stage, but a scan alone cannot always confirm cancer in a node. Doctors may use imaging, bronchoscopy, needle sampling, or surgery to examine tissue.

The result may guide a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, or targeted treatment. Genomic tumour profiling can look for changes that help identify suitable targeted medicines. Ask which nodes were sampled and whether the result came from tissue or imaging.

Keep the pathology report and scan summary together, and ask for the stage in plain language. Your team may discuss whether the cancer can be removed with a lung lobectomy, treated with chemotherapy, or managed with radiotherapy. Treatment is chosen according to the tumour type, node location, overall health, breathing function, and test results.

Record new cough, chest discomfort, breathlessness, swallowing difficulty, or a hoarse voice. A persistent hoarse voice deserves assessment and does not by itself show where cancer began.

Contact your oncology team promptly for worsening breathlessness, coughing blood, new confusion, severe weakness, or difficulty swallowing. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, fainting, or chest pain that is sudden or intense. New neurological symptoms may need urgent assessment because lung cancer can spread to the brain.

Which lymph nodes are involved, and how was this confirmed? What stage does this represent? Is genomic tumour profiling appropriate? Would surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or a combination be considered? What symptoms should prompt an urgent call?
