What should you know about lung cancer and a hoarse voice?

Hoarseness occurs when the vocal cords do not vibrate normally. A common cold, voice overuse, acid reflux and chronic cough can change the sound. Thyroid problems or a growth affecting the throat, thyroid or nearby nerves are other possibilities. Lung cancer can be associated with hoarseness when tissue affects the nerve moving a vocal cord, but hoarseness itself does not identify the cause.

Notice how long the change lasts and whether it comes with trouble swallowing, a neck lump, persistent cough, coughing up blood, noisy breathing or unexplained weight loss. This pattern helps a clinician decide whether the voice box, neck, chest or another area needs examination.

Arrange a medical review if hoarseness does not settle after a cold, keeps returning, or affects speaking and work. Rest your voice, drink fluids, avoid smoking and reduce throat irritants. A clinician may examine your mouth and neck, review reflux or medicines, listen to your breathing, and arrange a vocal-cord examination when needed.

Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathing difficulty, noisy breathing, inability to swallow saliva, or sudden swelling of the face or neck. Seek prompt advice for hoarseness with coughing up blood, a neck lump, significant swallowing difficulty or worsening chest symptoms.

Ask what may be irritating the vocal cords, whether reflux or a medicine is involved, how the cords will be examined, and which symptoms should prompt faster review.
