What should you know about lung cancer detection?

A clinician may ask about cough, breathlessness, chest discomfort, coughing blood, weight change, smoking history and exposure risks. A chest scan can show a suspicious area, enlarged lymph nodes, or disease outside the lung, but an image alone cannot always identify the exact cancer type.

A bronchoscopy, needle biopsy, or another procedure may collect cells or tissue. A pathologist examines the sample. Further testing, including genomic tumour profiling, may identify features that affect treatment choices. Staging scans help show whether disease is limited to the chest or has spread, including to the brain.

Arrange a timely appointment with a qualified clinician, take a list of medicines, and describe when symptoms began and how they have changed. Do not assume a cough or hoarse voice is cancer; these symptoms have many possible causes, but persistent or changing symptoms deserve assessment.

Ask what scan is planned, whether tissue is needed, how results will be shared, and whether testing could change the treatment plan. Depending on the findings, care may involve surgery such as lung lobectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or supportive care.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, coughing a large amount of blood, new confusion, fainting, sudden weakness, or chest pain that is severe or worsening. These signs need prompt assessment regardless of their cause.

Which test is next, what can it show, and when should I expect the result? If a biopsy is recommended, how will it be performed and what symptoms should prompt a call? Will the sample be tested for features that guide treatment?
