Lung cancer by age: what should you know?

Lung cancer can occur at different ages, and diagnosis and treatment depend on the tumour and the person rather than age alone. Doctors consider symptoms, scan findings, cancer type, overall health, other conditions, medicines and personal goals. A younger or older age does not by itself confirm or exclude lung cancer.

Age may affect how a person tolerates surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy, but fitness, lung function, nutrition, independence and other illnesses can be just as relevant. A younger person may need conversations about work, fertility or caring responsibilities. An older person may benefit from a review of medicines, memory, mobility and home support. Lung cancer can also appear with symptoms such as a persistent cough, breathlessness, chest discomfort, unexplained weight loss or a hoarse voice; these symptoms have many possible causes.

Arrange medical review for a persistent or changing respiratory symptom, regardless of age. The assessment may include an examination, chest imaging and a biopsy when needed. Staging shows whether disease is limited to the lung or has travelled elsewhere. Genomic tumour profiling may identify features that influence systemic treatment. Options can include surgery such as lung lobectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or supportive care. Ask for a treatment plan that reflects your strength, priorities and practical support.

Seek emergency care for severe breathlessness, blue lips, sudden confusion, coughing a large amount of blood, severe chest pain or fainting. Contact a clinician promptly for a cough that persists, new hoarseness, repeated chest infections or worsening breathlessness. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe because age does not make a concerning change less important.

Ask which tests are needed, what the stage and tumour type mean, and how your lung function and other conditions affect options. Ask about genomic testing, expected effects on daily activities, help with smoking cessation if relevant, transport or home support, and when symptoms require urgent contact.
