What should you know about lung cancer bone metastasis symptoms?

Bone metastases are areas where cancer has spread from another site to bone. They can weaken bone or irritate nearby tissues. Symptoms may include deep or persistent pain in the back, hips, ribs, or limbs, tenderness, reduced movement, or pain that is worse at night or with activity. Some people have no symptoms and are found to have bone involvement during scans.

These symptoms also occur with injuries, arthritis, infection, osteoporosis, and other conditions. Bone pain does not prove that lung cancer has spread. Clinicians use the history, examination, blood tests, and imaging to decide whether further evaluation is needed.

Tell the oncology team about new pain, pain that is increasing, a change in walking, or weakness. They may review scans and consider additional imaging. Treatment can target the cancer and the affected bone; options may include radiotherapy, systemic treatment, medicines for pain, and measures that reduce fracture risk. Palliative care can help with pain, mobility, sleep, and coping alongside cancer treatment.

Seek emergency care for sudden severe back pain, new leg weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, inability to stand, or pain after a minor movement that suggests a fracture. Spinal cord pressure is time-sensitive and needs immediate assessment.

Ask which bone is affected, whether the spine is involved, what imaging is planned, and how fracture or nerve risk will be managed. Ask how treatment could affect movement, pain, sleep, and daily activities.
