What should you know about lung cancer association?

Lung cancer may affect breathing, coughing, chest comfort, energy, appetite, or voice. Hoarse voice can occur when nearby nerves or structures are affected, but hoarseness has many possible causes and does not by itself establish lung cancer.

Cancer cells can sometimes travel beyond the lung. Brain metastases are secondary tumours in the brain and may cause neurological symptoms. Tests may include chest imaging, scans of other regions, tissue sampling, and genomic tumour profiling, which looks for tumour changes that may help select systemic treatment.

Arrange review for persistent cough, breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, or voice change. If lung cancer is confirmed, ask how its type and stage were established and whether profiling is appropriate. Treatment may involve lung lobectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted treatment, or immunotherapy. Palliative care can support symptoms and quality of life at any stage.

Get emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, coughing a large amount of blood, sudden weakness or speech trouble, a seizure, new confusion, or chest pain that is severe or rapidly worsening. Do not wait for a routine appointment when these symptoms appear.

Ask where the cancer is, whether it has spread, which tests are still needed, and whether genomic profiling could change treatment. Ask how each option may affect breathing, fatigue, pain, work, and daily life, and when palliative care could help.
