What should you know about lung cancer and pneumonia?

Pneumonia is an infection in the lung, while lung cancer develops from abnormal cells. Both can cause cough, breathlessness, chest discomfort, tiredness, and fever-like symptoms. A tumour that blocks or compresses an airway can reduce drainage and create a setting where infection develops beyond the blockage.

When symptoms persist, recur in the same area, or do not improve as expected, clinicians may arrange chest imaging, blood tests, sputum assessment, bronchoscopy, or a biopsy. These tests help separate infection, tumour, treatment effects, and other lung conditions.

Take antibiotics exactly as prescribed when bacterial pneumonia is diagnosed, and ask what improvement should look like. Rest, drink fluids if permitted, and follow advice about inhalers or oxygen. If lung cancer is known or suspected, keep the oncology and respiratory teams informed so infection care fits around cancer treatment.

Further management may include radiotherapy, chemotherapy, surgery such as lung lobectomy, or genomic tumour profiling, depending on the cancer findings. Treatment should be individualised around breathing reserve and the current infection.

Get emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, severe chest pain, or coughing a large amount of blood. Contact a clinician promptly if fever persists, breathing becomes harder, fluids cannot be kept down, or symptoms worsen after initial improvement.
