What should you know about lung cancer and liver cancer?

Cancer found in the liver may be a primary liver cancer or lung cancer that has spread there. Tests such as scans, blood tests, and a biopsy help the team identify the origin and understand the tumour’s features. The distinction matters because treatment is chosen for the cancer’s origin, not simply for the organ where a lesion appears.

Liver function also affects planning. The liver processes medicines and supports many body functions, so clinicians review existing liver disease, medications, breathing ability, nutrition, and performance status before recommending treatment.

Ask for a coordinated review by oncology, radiology, pathology, and, when needed, liver or chest surgery specialists. Possible options include medicines that travel through the bloodstream, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, liver resection, or tumour ablation. Some people receive one approach, while others have treatments combined or sequenced.

Bring imaging reports, biopsy results, medication lists, and details of previous treatment to appointments. Ask whether genomic testing could identify a treatment target and how liver function may alter the plan.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, fainting, new yellowing of the eyes, vomiting blood, or rapidly increasing abdominal swelling. Contact the oncology team promptly for fever, inability to keep fluids down, new bleeding, or a sudden decline in strength.

Which cancer began first, and how was that determined? What do the scans and biopsy show? Is the liver affected by a primary tumour or spread from the lung? Which treatments are intended to control the cancer, relieve symptoms, or both? How will breathing and liver function be monitored?
