Lung cancer and air pollution: what to know

Polluted air may contain fine particles and gases that reach deep into the airways. Repeated exposure can promote irritation and inflammation. Lung cancer usually reflects several interacting factors, which can include smoking, second-hand smoke, workplace exposures, inherited susceptibility, and outdoor or indoor air pollution. Air pollution does not mean a person has lung cancer, and clean-air habits cannot remove every possible risk.

Check local air-quality advice when available and reduce strenuous outdoor activity during pollution peaks. Keep indoor air as clean as practical by avoiding tobacco smoke, improving ventilation when outdoor air is better, and following safe instructions for cooking or heating equipment. If you work around dust, fumes, or fibres, use the protective controls supplied for that setting. Arrange a medical review for a persistent cough, repeated chest infections, unexplained weight loss, chest pain, or breathlessness. Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, sudden severe chest pain, or coughing up a substantial amount of blood. New weakness, a seizure, difficulty speaking, or a severe new headache also needs urgent assessment. Stable symptoms still warrant timely clinical review when they persist or worsen; air-quality exposure should not be used as the sole explanation.

Ask which causes could explain your symptoms, whether chest imaging is appropriate, and how your smoking or workplace history changes the assessment. Ask what exposure controls may help at home or work. If a tumour is diagnosed, ask whether molecular testing, Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, or surgery fits its type and extent.
