Lumpy breasts during menopause: what to know

During perimenopause, hormone fluctuations may cause swelling, tenderness, cysts, or fibrocystic texture. After menopause, breast tissue often changes in feel as glandular tissue becomes less prominent, but a lump should not be dismissed as a normal age-related change.

A breast lump is a common presentation of benign cysts and other non-cancerous conditions, and breast cancer can also present as a lump. The way a lump feels cannot provide a diagnosis. Note whether it is new, remains in the same place, or changes over time.

Book an appointment for a new or unfamiliar lump, especially if it persists through observation or is confined to one breast. Write down when you first noticed it, any pain, nipple discharge, skin change, and medicines or hormone treatments you use.

A clinician will examine the breast and nearby lymph nodes and may recommend breast ultrasound or other imaging. Keep routine breast screening appointments according to the programme advised for you; screening does not replace assessment of a new symptom.

Seek prompt review for a hard or fixed lump, rapid enlargement, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or a new change in breast shape. Redness, heat, swelling, or fever may indicate infection and needs timely care. Do not wait for symptoms to become painful before arranging assessment.

Ask what your examination suggests, whether imaging is needed, and how your menopausal stage or hormone treatment affects the assessment. Ask what changes should lead you to return sooner and when to check the area again.
