What should you know about itchy lumps on the skin?

Note whether the bumps appeared suddenly or gradually, stay in one place or move, and affect exposed skin, skin folds, hands, or the scalp. Atopic Dermatitis and Contact Dermatitis may cause itch with dry, irritated, or scaly skin. Hives often form raised areas that come and go, while Scabies may cause intense itch with bumps in characteristic areas and can affect close contacts. Psoriasis, Lichen Planus, Asteatotic Eczema, and a Skin Yeast Infection have different appearances, so a photograph and examination are more useful than guessing from itch alone.

Use a bland moisturiser, keep nails short, and choose lukewarm rather than hot showers. Wear loose, breathable clothing and pause any recently introduced fragranced product until the cause is clearer. Try not to scratch, since broken skin can become infected. Do not apply several new medicated creams at once; this can obscure the pattern or irritate it further. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on an appropriate anti-itch treatment after considering pregnancy, age, other medicines, and the appearance of the rash.

Seek urgent help for itchy bumps with swelling of the lips or tongue, breathing difficulty, faintness, or rapidly spreading blistering. Arrange prompt care if there is fever, pus, marked pain, warmth, or rapidly worsening redness. Book an assessment when the itch disrupts sleep, involves several household members, keeps returning, or does not improve with gentle skin care. A rash around the eyes or on the genitals also deserves specific advice.
