What should you know about lumpectomy procedure?

Short answer

A lumpectomy procedure removes a breast tumour with a surrounding margin, sends it for pathology, and usually involves planned follow-up care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the procedure

The treatment plan is based on pathology findings and your wider health, not on the presence of a breast lump by itself.

The main stages

Planning can include breast imaging, localisation of a non-palpable area, a discussion of anaesthesia, and review of medicines. In theatre, the surgeon removes the target through an incision designed around the location and size of the area. A lymph node procedure may be added when clinically appropriate. Afterward, pathology results are reviewed with you. For selected Breast Cancer or Paget Disease of the Breast cases, the team may discuss Radiotherapy. Mastectomy removes the whole breast and is a separate option for some patients.

Practical preparation and aftercare

Follow fasting and medicine instructions exactly, arrange a responsible adult to accompany you if required, and prepare loose clothing for the journey home. During recovery, keep the wound protected, take prescribed pain relief as directed, and do only the exercises approved by your team. Bruising, swelling, tenderness, and temporary numbness can occur. Keep a written list of questions and bring someone to the results discussion if that helps you remember the plan.

When advice is needed

Report fever, worsening redness, warmth, discharge, uncontrolled pain, persistent bleeding, or a wound that separates. A growing swelling or new arm swelling should be discussed promptly. Emergency care is appropriate for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or a sudden deterioration. If you are uncertain, use the postoperative contact instructions rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Questions for the surgical visit

Ask what localisation method will be used, whether node sampling is planned, how the scar and breast contour may look, and when you can drive, work, exercise, or shower. Ask when the pathology report will be available and what options may follow if the margin is not clear.

Questions people ask

Is a lumpectomy done under anaesthesia?

The anaesthetic approach is planned with you and depends on the operation, your health, and the hospital’s practice.

What happens if the margin is not clear?

Your team will explain the report and may discuss observation, further tissue removal, or another treatment according to the full findings.
