Lump under the skin behind the neck

A blocked skin gland can form a cyst, while an irritated follicle may produce a sore bump. Lymph nodes can enlarge during infections affecting the scalp, ear, throat, or skin. Head and Neck Cancer and Lymphoma are among the diagnoses clinicians may assess when a neck lump persists or has concerning characteristics; Cancer of Unknown Primary is considered in selected cases when abnormal tissue is found without an obvious starting site. These possibilities do not mean that a particular lump is cancer.

Measure changes by noting the date you first felt it rather than prodding it throughout the day. Record tenderness, redness, drainage, recent illness, scalp problems, and any medicines. Book a clinical review if it remains, enlarges, becomes less mobile, or develops skin changes. The clinician may inspect the skin and scalp, feel nearby nodes, and use ultrasound or another test if examination does not explain it.

Get urgent care if swelling expands quickly, redness spreads, pus is accompanied by fever, or you develop difficulty breathing or swallowing. Seek timely review for a hard, fixed, painless lump; persistent night sweats; unexplained weight change; or a lump that continues to grow.

Ask whether the lump feels like a cyst, lymph node, or another tissue, what changes matter during observation, and whether imaging is useful. Clarify how infection would be treated, whether a sample might be needed, and when you should return if it does not improve.
