Lump under the chin on the neck that hurts

A neck lump is not itself a diagnosis. Dental infection, a sore throat, skin inflammation, or another local cause can enlarge a lymph node. A breast lump is a common presentation of breast cancer; by contrast, a lump under the chin needs assessment in its own anatomical context. Head and Neck Cancer, Lymphoma, Thyroid Cancer, and Cancer of Unknown Primary are conditions a clinician may consider when swelling has concerning features, but the lump alone does not establish any of them.

Arrange an appointment if the swelling does not settle, keeps returning, grows, feels hard or fixed, or has no clear infectious trigger. Note when it appeared, whether it changes with meals or illness, and whether you have fever, dental pain, sore throat, night sweats, or unexplained weight change. Do not squeeze or repeatedly press it. A clinician may examine your mouth, throat, teeth, skin, and neck, then decide whether observation, imaging, blood tests, or a sample is appropriate.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, spreading redness, or a high fever with marked illness. Prompt review is also sensible for a lump that remains present or enlarges, especially when it is firm, tethered, or accompanied by persistent voice or throat changes.

Ask what structures lie beneath the lump, which findings suggest infection, how long monitoring is reasonable, and whether dental or throat examination is needed. You can also ask what an ultrasound or tissue sample would show and which changes should prompt earlier contact.
