What should you know about a lump that hurts on your neck?

Tenderness can occur when a lymph node responds to a throat, ear, dental, or skin infection. Muscle strain, an inflamed cyst, or irritation in nearby tissues can also produce a sore swelling. The location and feel matter: a lump may be in front, along the side, or near the back of the neck. Pain does not by itself rule in or rule out cancer; head and neck cancer, lymphoma, and thyroid cancer require clinical assessment rather than symptom interpretation alone.

Keep your hands off the lump except for gentle observation. Write down its location, tenderness, approximate size, and when the pain began. Mention recent fever, sore throat, dental treatment, ear symptoms, skin breaks, or vaccination to a clinician. Do not apply harsh products or attempt to puncture it. Arrange review when pain or swelling is not improving, when the cause is unclear, or when the lump becomes firm, fixed, or larger.

Get urgent care for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow, drooling, rapidly spreading swelling, severe neck stiffness, or a very unwell feeling. Prompt review is also appropriate for persistent fever, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, blood in saliva, ongoing hoarseness, or a lump that remains after other symptoms have settled.

Ask whether the tenderness fits an inflamed lymph node or another process, whether your throat, teeth, ears, or skin should be checked, and whether a scan is needed. Ask what change should trigger a faster review and how long to monitor the lump.
