What should you know about a lump that suddenly appeared on your neck?

The location, texture, tenderness, movement, and timing help a clinician narrow the possibilities. A recent sore throat, dental problem, skin infection, or cold can make a nearby lymph node enlarge. A lump lower in the front of the neck may relate to the thyroid. A persistent, firm, enlarging, or fixed lump needs a more careful examination; a neck lump can be a presentation of head and neck cancer, lymphoma, or thyroid cancer, but a lump alone does not establish any of these diagnoses.

Do not squeeze, repeatedly press, or try to drain the area. Note when you first felt it, whether it changes in size, and whether you have fever, pain, swallowing difficulty, voice change, or recent infection. Arrange a clinical assessment if it does not settle, keeps growing, or has no clear explanation. The clinician may examine your mouth, throat, skin, thyroid area, and lymph-node regions, then decide whether imaging or a sample is appropriate.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing swelling, severe weakness, or swelling with signs of a serious allergic reaction. Arrange prompt medical review for a hard or fixed lump, unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweats, persistent fever, coughing blood, or a voice change that does not improve.

Ask: Where is the lump arising from? Does its tenderness or movement suggest an inflamed lymph node? What examination or scan is needed? How will we follow its size and texture? If a sample is recommended, what will it show and when should I expect the result?
