What should you know about a lump on the upper spine by the neck?

The area includes the upper spinal bones, neck muscles, skin, and lymph nodes. A recent strain can produce a tight or tender muscle area; a blocked skin gland can form a cyst; and nearby infection can enlarge a lymph node. Head and neck cancer and lymphoma can also present with a neck mass, although the position does not tell you which cause is present.

Describe whether the lump is central or to one side, soft or firm, mobile or fixed, and painful or painless. Mention recent exercise, injury, scalp or throat infection, dental symptoms, fever, night sweats, weight change, voice change, or trouble swallowing.

Make a medical appointment for an unexplained lump that remains or grows, especially if it feels fixed or deep. Examination can help separate a muscle or bone prominence from a mass. Imaging and, when appropriate, a needle sample may be used to identify the tissue involved.
