Lump on thigh under the skin: what to know

Pay attention to whether it is soft or firm, freely mobile or fixed, painful or painless, and whether the overlying skin has changed. These observations help a clinician decide what examination or testing is appropriate.

A soft, mobile swelling can occur in fatty tissue. A cyst may have a small opening or recur in the same place. A painful red lump can be a boil, especially when it feels warm or develops drainage. A growth that enlarges, feels fixed, or changes the skin needs review; a surface lesion can occasionally be basal cell carcinoma, though that is not the only explanation for a thigh lump.

Measure the area only if a clinician recommends tracking it, and make a note of when you first noticed it. Reduce rubbing from clothing and avoid squeezing or attempting to remove it. Arrange an appointment for a lump that persists, grows, recurs, or affects walking. Treatment depends on the diagnosis and may range from observation to drainage, removal, or a steroid injection into the skin for selected lesions.

Seek prompt care if the lump becomes rapidly larger, hot, very painful, or surrounded by spreading redness, or if you develop fever or feel unwell. Get urgent help for sudden leg swelling with chest pain or breathlessness. A bleeding, ulcerated, or steadily changing surface should be assessed without delay.

Ask whether the lump is superficial or deeper, whether its size and mobility are reassuring, and whether imaging or a sample is needed. Ask which symptoms would change the urgency and whether exercise or clothing needs adjusting while you wait.
