Lump on the side of the neck below the ear: what should you know?

Lymph nodes near the ear can enlarge with scalp, ear, throat or dental inflammation. The parotid salivary gland also lies near this area, and a blocked duct or gland growth can cause swelling that changes with meals. Head and neck cancer and lymphoma may present with a neck lump; the location does not establish cancer, and thyroid cancer is usually assessed lower in the neck.

Mention ear pain, hearing change, dental problems, dry mouth, fever and whether swelling appears during meals. Avoid pressing or trying to drain the lump. A clinician may examine the ear, mouth, teeth, salivary glands and neck, then consider ultrasound or a needle sample. Treatment follows the diagnosis.

Obtain urgent help if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing, facial weakness appears, or redness and severe pain spread quickly. Seek prompt review for a firm or fixed lump, growth, persistent voice change, night sweats or unexplained weight loss.
