Lump on stomach under the skin: what to know

A skin lump is not enough to identify its cause. Notice whether it moves, feels soft or firm, changes the surface skin, or becomes sore and warm.

A soft, mobile lump can arise in fatty tissue, while a blocked follicle or cyst may have a central pore or recurring swelling. A tender, red lump may be a boil, particularly if it becomes filled with pus. A sore that does not heal, bleeds, or forms a persistent crust deserves review because some skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma, can change the skin surface. These clues guide assessment but do not provide a diagnosis by themselves.

Do not pierce, squeeze, or massage the lump. Keep the area clean, avoid friction from tight clothing, and photograph it with a simple date note if it changes. Book a clinician’s review for a new lump that remains, grows, returns, or interferes with movement. Depending on the cause, management may involve observation, drainage, removal, or a targeted treatment such as a steroid injection into the skin.

Seek prompt medical care if redness spreads, pain escalates, the area feels hot, or you develop fever or feel unwell. Get urgent help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, or a firm bulge that becomes trapped and cannot be gently reduced. A rapidly enlarging or bleeding skin change also needs timely assessment.

Ask whether the lump appears to sit in the skin, fat, muscle, or abdominal wall, and whether it needs imaging or sampling. Ask what changes would suggest infection, how long observation is reasonable, and whether treatment could leave a scar.
