What it may mean
Tenderness may occur when a lymph node reacts to a nearby throat, ear, dental or skin problem. A cyst or salivary-gland issue can also become sore. Pain does not rule cancer in or out: head and neck cancer, lymphoma and thyroid cancer may present with a lump, and the lump itself cannot determine the diagnosis.
What to do next
Book an appointment if the lump does not settle after a recent illness, keeps returning or affects movement. Record pain, fever, dental symptoms, sore throat, ear symptoms and any medicines you take. Examination may be followed by ultrasound or a needle sample; treatment depends on the identified cause, so do not squeeze or repeatedly massage the area.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, drooling, rapidly spreading redness, severe swelling, or a high fever with marked illness. Seek prompt review if pain persists, the lump grows, or you develop a lasting voice change or unexplained weight loss.
